Publishing Assistant, like Paratext, has a setting to automatically update from time to time. In Publishing Assistant, this is chosen by going Menu > Help > Automatically Update Publishing Assistant.
A reasonable Internet connection is required to check for and to download automatic updates. You may wish to disable this if your Internet is slow or expensive.
Publishing Assistant, like Paratext, has an option for receiving pre-release updates. These updates contain the latest fixes and improvements from the developers as soon as the unit tests have passed. Unfortunately, sometimes the developers make changes with unexpected side-effects, so these updates are only recommended for advanced users who are willing to tolerate the occasional disruption in their work.
Signing up for pre-release updates is a service to the wider Publishing Assistant community, because pre-release users are able to test and comment on updates before they become available to less adventurous users. Pre-release updates are available for about week before they become official updates.
You can sign up for pre-release updates by going Menu > shift-Help > Advanced > Release Stage > Pre-release.
Rolling back updates
Unfortunately, software isn’t perfect and neither are the updates. If at some point you install an update which significantly hinders your work, you can roll it back. Thankfully this has not been frequently necessary, but when it’s needed, the option is available.
First, you should report a problem to the developers using Menu > Help > Report a problem. This is important so that they can produce a fix. If the problem is serious enough the developers may block other users from receiving the same update.
Secondly, you need to turn off automatic updates: Menu > Help > Automatically Update Publishing Assistant. When the developers advise you that a fix has been released you will want to enable automatic updates again.
Thirdly, you need to use Windows to roll back the problem update: Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates > select the latest Publishing Assistant update > Uninstall.
